Bio
Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, a poor helpless stork was blown off course by a hurricane. The poor stork fought the storm until, too tired to continue, the stork dropped the baby. The baby fell down a chimney and ended up in the home of a couple who were quite surprised to receive such a gift so late in life. Following the drive-by storking, the couple raised the child . . . Or maybe it was a little more conventional than that.

Musical likes:

Christian bands that are long gone, but not forgotten:
+ Poor Old Lu - The greatest, most creative Christian band. Period. In the history of Christian music, no band has approached the depth and presence of Poor Old Lu. Their lyrics are deep, moving, and eminently spiritual. The acoustic music set a standard few bands - secular or Christian - have matched. "Digging Deep" features a deeply moving vocal interplay between Aaron Sprinkle and Jeremy Enigk (Sunny Day Real Estate and The Fire Theft). Poor Old Lu surfaced with a new album in 2002, four full years after the band officially retired. I passionately hope for another reunion album. Poor Old Lu addressed edgy issues in their songs: hypocrisy, despair, hurt, sin, death, abuse, brokenness. They were emo years before anyone knew what emo was. Lyrically, their closest successor band in Christian music is Switchfoot, although the musical styles differ sharply.
+ Black Eyed Sceva (l/k/a Model Engine) - Deep lyrics, almost unplayable chord progressions, and unusual time signatures. Their song "Adrian James" is the greatest Christian song nobody ever heard. The lyrics are profound. "Cleverness" and "Confirmation Day" and "Ryan's Driveway" are other awesome songs. Somebody please cover these!!!
+ Black Cherry Soda - a Philadelphia-based punk band with a message. Good lyrics, decent music.
+ Hokus Pick: http://www.myspace.com/hokuspicktheband (fan site) - creative, crazy pop-punk Canadians. "Velour Shirt" is the dumbest but most fun song about junior high reality. Many of their other songs are deep, with challenging lyrics. "Let Go, Let God" is a great worship song.

Recently gone Christian bands:
Acceptance: http://www.purevolume.com/acceptance and http://www.myspace.com/acceptance Their brief time produced a stellar cd, "Phantoms," containing some of the most melodic emotional music ever to his Christian airwaves. "Something Different" is a hauntingly beautiful song. One of the successor bands is Search Rescue: http://www.myspace.com/searchrescue
Audio Adrenaline: http://www.purevolume.com/audioadrenaline and http://www.myspace.com/audioa Audio A was a band that never "sold out" to commercialism. Their style ranged from rap and rap/surf blend to mainstream rock to worship to emo. Their message was always clear, and their talent connected with hearts. "Ocean Floor" was their farewell gift, a powerful, melodic reminder of the measure of God's grace.
The Chemistry: One all-too-brief cd is all that The Chemistry left behind, but that cd practically defined Christian emo. "Hopeless" easily claims a spot among the best songs nobody ever heard.
Five Iron Frenzy: http://www.purevolume.com/fiveironfrenzy and http://www.myspace.com/fiveironfrenzy Goofy, hyperactive Denver ska. "Every New Day" is a song that will always connect with the heart. One of the successor bands is Brave Saint Saturn: http://www.myspace.com/bravesaintsaturn
The Insyderz: http://www.purevolume.com/theinsyderz and http://www.myspace.com/insyderzthe Uneven quality, but plenty of energy and unquestionably Christian lyrics were the hallmarks of the Insyderz. Their two ska worship cds were their best efforts, and contained several tremendous songs.
The OC Supertones: http://www.purevolume.com/theocsupertones The band that defined Christian ska, the Supertones were far better in concert than on cd. "Old Friend" and the entire "Faith of a Child" cd are among many highlights.
Slow Coming Day: http://www.myspace.com/slowcomingdaymusic One cd, Farewell to the Familiar, defined this prototypical Christian emo band. Orion Walsh's lyrics perfectly combined with haunting chord progressions to draw listeners in to the emotion behind the lyrics. After the breakup, half of the band briefly reconstituted as Die Midwestern. Orion Walsh continues his solo career, still delivering lyrically stunning acoustic solos.
Terminal: http://www.purevolume.com/terminal and http://www.myspace.com/terminal Like The Chemistry, Terminal left behind but one cd, characterized by beautiful acoustic songs with soul-filled lyrics.

Secular Bands (listing does NOT imply endorsement of lyrics): Snow Patrol (and their side project, The Reindeer Section), The All-American Rejects, This Providence, The Academy Is, The Appleseed cast, Hawthorne Heights, Plain White T's, Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service, Taking Back Sunday, Dreams Avenue, The Get Up Kids, Trust Company, The Church, The Ataris, The Early November, A Month of Somedays, The Spill Canvas, Falling For July, Yellowcard, Sugarcult, Saves The Day, Coldplay, U2.

Musical dislike: the oh-so-oxymoronic "country music." It's just annoying slow whiny rap-a-billy.
